Check up: Who was Mahatma Gandhi ?

The most famous person of India was without any question Mahatma Gandhi , of who India owes its independance.

As Mohandras Karamchand Gandhi he saw the light of the world on 2nd October 1869 in Gujarat, India. His family was part of the Vaishya-caste of buisnessmen and member of the Vishnuites (a special group of Hindus), but their house was also open for any kind of religion: Muslims, other Hindus and members of the Jainism. The Jainism philosophy of total non-vilolence was an important foundation pillar of his own attitude.

At 14 years old his parents got him to marry the younger Kasturba Nakaniji. He had his first child, Harilal, two years later at 16. In 1888 Ghandhi traveled to London to study law and to argue about Christanity (he tried to read the whole holy bible). Later he worked as advocate back in Bombay till a friend of the family asked him for help, in South Africa.

Arriving there, Gandhi recognized directly the bad situation of the Indians. During his work for the human right for the Indians of this country he develloped the principes of his political philosophy. He gave a vow of chasity and ised to test his self-control in association with eating and drinking. Gandhi founded the Indian National Congress which spoke for the Indians in South Africa and later in India, too.

Back in India he fought for the right of Indians in India. He sopke against the exploitation, the bondage as well as the British predominance. And, surprisingly, he fought also against the cast of the Untouchables in form of laws and rules. Gandhi's idea was abiding by the truth (Satyagrana), Freedom from the violence (Ahisma) and an individual and political autocracy (Swaraj), which made him famous in all India.

His nickname Mahatma (which means "Great/Big soul") was given to him as a name of honesty. But he wasnt always happy with it. In fact,he became famous with it all over the world.Anyway...

In 1930 he appeated for the March of Salt, his most spectacular action to protest against the British salt-monopoly.Mahatma used always non-violent ways to protest, for example the non-cooperation. Finally in 1942 he spoke out about his biggest dream: Independance of India. Therefore he spent 2 years more in prison.

His dream came true in 1947, but India was also divided into two differnt parts. Gandhi was sad about it. He wanted on big nation, Hindus and Muslims peacefully together!

Because of big troubles between Hindus and Muslims he started a hunger strike and so he was able to stop the fighting.

Mohandras Karamchand Gandhi died in 1948 (30th January), shot by the Hindu-fanatic Nathruram Godse who planned it already 10 years before.

Conclusively Gandhi was the most important factor for India to become independant. The Indians, Hindus and Muslims, respect till today his work and the whole world sees him as the big man from India...
